Subject: Update on the gnarly hand injury - hand vs belt conveyor

Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

Thought some of you might be curious about how the hubs had recovered so far from his injury on October 22. Here's the story so far:

I
t's been a really interesting couple of weeks since the hubs' hand injury. He had immediate surgery to clean and debride the area shortly after we arrived at U of Iowa Hospital. Then another the following Thursday, and another on Saturday, nearly a week after the injury. Then finally, on Tuesday of last week, back to surgery for the reconstruction.

The ortho surgeons opened a flap in the outer layer of his abdomen, at about waist level, and attached his hand to this flap of skin, blood vessels and tissue. The increased blood flow and healing ability of the surgically injured area of the abdomen will naturally fill in the void where the belt ground away tissue on the side of his hand. That tissue must be regenerated to provide cushion for what remains of the bones of his wrist and also for protection from infection in case that skin is ever scratched or scraped or cut again.

We came home from the hospital on Thursday and are learning how to do the normal daily things to keep him comfortable and doing the simple therapy to maintain his shoulder joint during this time of immobilization.

Back to the Dr on Thursday of this week for a recheck and dressing changes, then the  (hopefully) final surgery to detach his hand from his side is scheduled on the 16th of November. Physical therapy with a hand specialist begins shortly after that.

Still a long healing process ahead of us, but the doctors seem to think that with good therapy and hard work, he'll have a good functioning hand in the long run. We are both so very thankful that he still has his hand, and for the amazing ortho-hand team at U of I. And thankful for the many messages of encouragement and prayers for healing he's received. God's always been in control, will always be, and we've been deeply blessed.
