Subject: DNA test--grizzly bears

Big Sky Country
Saw a dna test topic below, thought some might be interested in this.....

Maybe 10+ yrs ago, there was a study done on grizzly bear population.

A retired Fish and Game biologist I know ran it.

The area was east of the continental divide, from Glacier Park to hiway 200.

(I'm in Montana, by the way--Big Sky Country)

They fenced in a little area, loosely, with barb wire.

Placed smelly bait inside of it.

Another fence farther out to keep cows out.

Collected the bear hair from inner fence. Known by local wits as 'bear hair snare'

And did dna on hair samples.

Before the study, our wildlife 'experts' had forecast a population of about 200 grizzly bears in study area. After the study---they called it 600.

We now have bears ranging--and some denning--50 miles or more east of the mtns. Population may be at 1,000.

A rifle shot in mtns in hunting season is a dinner bell. They come to it. They will try to run you off a kill.

Meanwhile, Montana has delayed their first grizzly hunt in yrs to see how protests shake out. Idaho is trying to issue one tag, Wyoming about a dozen. They are in federal court in Missoula to see if they can manage their own wildlife.

I posted a couple weeks ago about a weird yrlg st death---the govt trapper had seen it--from a distance---as he was up here flying and trying to kill wolves. They've been killing cattle 'all up and down the front' is how he phrased it.
