Southern Minnesota | First explain the operation right now I have 12 beef cows and feed out all the calves.
Thinking of not feeding out and having more beef cows like maybe 15 -20. The reason for change I like seeing the mamas with the baby calves. But don't mind feeders either but have limited space only like 5 Ac pasture
After weaning the feeders get a grain mix all they can eat free choice plus what grass hay they want
I buy all my grain but have enough hay so don't need to purchase that.
The cows
Right now I feed free choice grass hay all they can eat. About 8-9 pounds of same grain mix feeders get. Cows always look good except for this last winter with the extended cold.
As far as the cows go
Here is my question thinking of buying some standing corn for corn silage bagging it and feeding about 30# a day along with free choice grass hay. Could I then get away from the grain and just top dress a supplement or would I still need a little grain. I also have a little alfalfa hay that I thought I would feed in cold weather maybe every other bale. Whats better for the cow the grain or corn silage?
Or should I just stick with whats been working. Old school feed with 5 gallon buckets for grain and hay rings or bunk for hay.

Here how my feed supply shakes out
Large squares are 6.5 feet long dry but are wrapped for outside storage
60 large squares of Alfalfa
100 large squares of grass
600 Small squares grass about 45#
Need to buy corn for the grain
also standing corn for the corn silage plus pay someone to chop it
What advice do you have
