Subject: How late in the season can corn still abort?

Vale, SD
36,000 planted pop on irrigated ground. We always have plants that try a second ear but gets aborted immediately. This year the second ears are all brown silks. Does this mean the plant is going for it or can it still change? We are 171 GDUs ahead of average this year so its had a good year so far.
