N FLA | The heifers I kept out from last year. They have been here on a grass field and now get peanut vine residue for a couple weeks. I need to ask the owner about planting a rye cover crop on his land this fall. I think it will be OK. I bring them a bag of commodity blend every week to keep them friendly.
I probably need to find an Angus bull to put here in January. And I will bring about 20 fall calving pairs over here with them for the winter. These were mostly out of $400-500 cows.
On a related topic. I spoke with the cattle economist. He said average sale price was $2630 at the Okeechobee bred heifer auction in September. Might be some heartburn there now. I don't have any delusions these will be $2600, but they were the best heifers from the best cows. They will either breed and have a live calf or not.
I even have the Jersey still. I need to find a place for her next spring as a bred or else I will have another nurse cow.
