Subject: Plot update (ear pictures)

McLeod County, MN

I spent the afternoon in the plot again today. A couple thoughts:

1. Some hybrids are WAY ahead of others.
2. I think the hybrids with lower kernel counts can easily keep up with the ones with higher counts
3. I saw ZERO bugs in the field. A few mosquitoes was about it. No NCLB, no Goss, no rust, no excuse for any of them.

4. I see minor K deficiency on the lowest leave on some hybrids, and almost no N deficiency on any of them.
5. The ears are still flexing and these are just preliminary counts.
6. All I had to do was kick the dirt 1/2 inch to make a mud ball.

7. Some of the root lodged corn pulled itself up, some hybrids decided to green snap a little with the wind on Wed
8. Some ears are short and stout while others are long and slender. Variation in kernel size is easily noticeable. I saw some plants with 12 kernel rows that had massive kernels.
9. I still have no idea which ones will win, but I am starting to see which ones I think are solid choices agrinomically speaking.

10. Anything under 200 will be thoroughly disappointing, especially with another 2" of rain later this month and no frost.
11. This was planted 4/28/15. According to the Pioneer GDU calc this field has 1,537 GDUs. Most hybrids need 2,300-2,550 to finish. 30,800 population with final stand of around 30 k.
12. I am banking on 80 kernels to make a bushel.
